Day 16: Trearddur Bay to Four Mile Bridge

Today we tackled the southern half of Holy Island from Trearddur Bay to Four Mile Bridge. After following a narrow road out of Trearddur Bay and crossing a small heath we came upon two fellow walkers with large backpacks. We struck up a conversation and learned that these English ladies were walking the Anglesey Coastal Path. It was a great opportunity to talk with somebody else other than Greg, so we decided to walk this section of the route with our new friends: Hilary from Bournemouth, Devon and Lou from Preston, Lancashire.

The scenery today was particularly diverse. Within one five minute stretch we had traversed an area of boggy heath before descending down to a beautiful golden sand beach and then diverting inland through a dry pine plantation.

We met some friendly locals manning a coastguard tower who not only showed us around their tower but also told us about a local pub worth visiting. Given their recommendation we made a bee-line for the nearest town and detoured off the path 500 m or so to a pub called The White Eagle.

After a quick pint and a bite to eat, we set off on our merry way back along the shore before being diverted inland via the pine forest and boggy woodland in order to avoid RAF Valley. There had been a number of fighter jets flying overhead, in formation throughout the day. We learned that Prince William had been posted at this base for two years during his pilot training.

We eventually made our way to Four Mile Bridge via a series of boardwalks which skirted an estuary. After another bite to eat at a local café we said our goodbyes to our new friends as we caught the bus back to Holyhead to pick up our bags. We then took a further bus to Menai Bridge where we had previously booked accommodation.
