I like
London. It is a cauldron of engineering innovation.
We caught
the train from Heathrow. Out the window the scene is of terraced houses and
allotments, just like TV. The train goes underground, and I fall in love with
the oxblood tile designs at the stations. We change trains to another line with
smaller carriages. We navigate stairs and throngs of people. I am following
Helga, not knowing where I am going.
London at
the peak of the industrial revolution was the largest city in the world. According
to our walking tour guide, 1000 tonnes of horse poop was picked up off the
streets every day and just imagine the quantities of human poop that 2.4
million people produce…. another story. For whatever reason what must have
started out as a small village beside a river became so popular that it outgrew
its footprint and in response Victorian engineers got creative and went
underground with their railway. I get the feeling that anything was possible.
